BECOMING INVOLVED IN YOUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY

By Douglas Haddad, Ph.D.

Fall 2008

Throughout the school day, children are faced with a wide variety of challenges, not only academically but socially among their peers.  Kids want to fit in and be accepted in some way shape or form.  It is as simple as that!  There are many opportunities for children to form friendships and build life skills by being a part of afterschool activities in sports, music clubs, drama clubs, art workshops, literary social groups, leadership in student council, and by voicing their opinions to establish a new club.

Many kids find interest and reward in being active in the community outside of the school setting participating in raising awareness for causes that they are passionate about.   A child is able to realize that even at a young age they too can make a difference if they are allowed to voice their opinion.

In a kid’s life where acceptance, feeling safe and secure, and fitting in are so valued, tolerance to those that are “different” from thyself is an important value that must be ingrained early on in life.  The exposure to many avenues and opportunities help a child achieve this understanding that the world in which they live in is rich with diversity and plentiful with hope for all.

How can you help to get a child involved in their school community?

      ·      Have them contact a teacher or an administrator in the school to find out how

they can become involved in an afterschool activity.

  • Get a friend or a group of friends together to join a club afterschool.

  • Encourage a child to become active in the school community by telling   him/her how much ability he/she has that would help to benefit many people

  • Sit down with a child and have them discuss their likes with you.  Provide them with a list of potential activity options to choose from.

  • Teachers and administrators can “invite” students to specific groups to facilitate their participation and involvement in the school climate.
  • Be a role model and an example of being involved yourself in helping others and staying active in making a difference in your own community.
